On Wednesday, President Obama appeared at a wind turbine plant in Fairless Hills, Pennsylvania to discuss his plans for reducing dependence on foreign oil and increasing reliance on green energy. During this time, he took questions from employees of the plant, and one brought up the price of gas. President Obama responded:
“If you’re complaining about the price of gas and you’re only getting 8 miles a gallon, you know,” Obama said laughingly. “You might want to think about a trade-in.”
Of course, these days President Obama is not paying directly for his own gas, nor is he pumping his own gas. He does attempt to appear to remain in touch with this concern that faces so many Americans. In his energy policy speech last week, he related back to the high oil and gas prices Americans faced three years ago, but he couched his language in the fact that he remembers because he was in campaign mode, not necessarily because it affected him personally. Appearing before a friendly crowd with Al Sharpton on Wednesday, President Obama went out of his way to state that he remembers what it was like to pump his own gas. Of course though, President Obama has defined the term “limousine liberal” on another level. As part of his recent push of green initiatives, he is requiring that by 2015, all federal vehicles be “energy efficient”. The presidential fleet of limousines is exempt, of course. Granted the heavily armored build of such vehicles do make them much heavier, but GM does make hybrid Hummers and hybrid Escalades. Why can’t such a hybrid fleet be custom made for presidential use? All of this talk also comes on the heels of a recent report that despite President Obama’s push for making the federal government more green, last year, gas consumption by federal vehicles was up 7% over the previous year, and at its highest in 5 years.
President Obama has continued to push for green energy initiatives to help spur the economy and create jobs, but this has been ineffective. The stimulus package signed over two years ago devoted $60 billion specifically to green energy projects, yet that bill of course did not prevent unemployment from rising over 8% as promised. In her recent speech in India, Governor Palin characterized such a push for green energy as “social engineering” and rightly highlighted how the push for green energy in Europe has lead to massive unemployment and spiraling debt in countries like Spain.
In his speech at the wind turbine plant, President Obama took questions from plant employees. Beyond his wrong headed energy policies, President Obama could not answer questions from these employees about his own initiatives, plans, and funding for green energy!
Perhaps he could learn a thing or two from a woman who knows exactly what the best thing is for the country’s energy needs and can answer definitively when questioned.
