When the Theater of Shiny Objects, Media Malpractice and Operation Demoralize Converge

Late last night, a lone gunman entered a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, and wreaked unbelievable havoc on an unsuspecting movie audience.  As of the writing of this article, 12 innocent people are dead and 59 people were injured as a result of this, the largest mass shooting in U.S. history.

The youngest casualty was only 6 years old.  The youngest injured was only 3 months old.

Earlier today Governor Palin responded to this horrifying event with the following note on Facebook:

Todd’s and my thoughts and prayers go out to the victims of the terrible tragedy in Colorado.  Our family joins others in praying for everyone affected by the evil that inexplicably took innocent lives.  We wish to remind all to hold loved ones tight.

–Sarah Palin

Surprisingly, the presidential nominees from both parties gave what looks to be equally somber, but appropriate responses.  (I guess President Obama will skip throwing a self-serving campaign rally for this shooting).

The press and the rest of the left (BIRM) however, are a different story entirely.

Regressive Mayor Michael Bloomberg of the People’s Republic of New York City thought this would be the perfect time to prompt the Presidential nominees to push for more gun control, because, you know, one or two more laws on the books would surely have dissuaded and discouraged James Holmes from killing and maiming countless innocents.  Lefty celebrities and Piers Morgan follow suit.

Twitter lit up like a Christmas tree as various and sundry lefties decided that it was Rush Limbaugh’s fault.

And of course, and totally predictably…the press decided yet again try to push a possible Tea Party angle:

Here is the exchange between ABC News chief investigator Brian Ross and host George Stephanopoulos about apparent suspect James Holmes:

Stephanolpoulos: I’m going to go to Brian Ross. You’ve been investigating the background of Jim Holmes here. You found something that might be significant.

Ross: There’s a Jim Holmes of Aurora, Colorado, page on the Colorado Tea party site as well, talking about him joining the Tea Party last year. Now, we don’t know if this is the same Jim Holmes. But it’s Jim Holmes of Aurora, Colorado.

Stephanolpoulos: Okay, we’ll keep looking at that. Brian Ross, thanks very much.

So let me get this straight.

Because the names were the same (James Holmes being such an extraordinarily unique name, I suppose) and with absolutely nothing else to go on, mainline ABC News reporters suggested on live television that there could be a connection between this Tea Party patriot and a psychopathic monster.

Aaron Goldstein from the American Spectator nails it:

What this tells me is that the moment ABC News found out who the shooter was, a researcher did a Google search “James Holmes Colorado Tea Party” and hit paydirt. Or so they thought. But what is it in the mindset of ABC News, other mainstream media outlets and liberals at large that they would immediately connect mass murder to a member of the local Tea Party?

Now I know I’m #JustABlogger and this is just an OpEd, but it would seem to me that when you don’t have all the facts to a story, when all you have is supposition and theory, that the wise course of action is to say nothing until your theories are proven true because otherwise, you could end up smearing innocent people based on a lie and put folks at risk of being the target of retribution for something they took no part in.

And just like the couple whose address Spike Lee publicized because he thought they were related to George Zimmerman of the Trayvon Martin case (fearful for their safety, they were forced to go into hiding because of deluge of threats and media attention),  so too another innocent, 58 year old James Holmes in Colorado had to take protective measures and have his telephone disconnected because of ABC’s feckless reporting.

Something he never should have had to do.

This is not an isolated incident.

In 2010, Andrew Joseph Stack flew a small passenger airplane into an IRS building in Austin, TX.  The reaction of the left was almost instantaneous. To them it was obvious: this was an act of “right-wing domestic terror” committed by a Tea Party activist .

As the facts came out of course, we learned that Stack had a long history of hate toward the IRS as his online manifesto made clear; and that if anything, his ideology veered more left than right.  But then, he didn’t seem to have been driven by ideology but rather by a sick, demented mind that caused him to unleash his rage in an irrational, hateful way against those he saw as his enemy.

Let us move forward to 2011 and a supermarket parking lot near Tuscon, Arizona, where Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and 18 other people were shot during a public meeting.  Six of those shot died, including a District Court Chief Judge and a nine-year-old girl.

Again, the left jumped to the conclusion that this must be the work of a tea party terrorist; but this time their mindless screeds were aided and abetted by the so-called professional journalists who openly forwarded the theory that Rush Limbaugh, the Tea Party and Governor Palin herself were somehow personally responsible for this tragedy.  She had published a map of targets for the 2010 election cycle after all, and this one graphic must have driven the shooter to a frenzy of tea-infused rage.  That both parties and an endless number of political groups and PACs use the same tactic to highlight races they believe are important was entirely irrelevant.

Yet again, we learned that the assassin, Jared Lee Loughner, was not motivated by anything political.  He wasn’t a tea party activist.  He wasn’t a conservative.  He was just a sick young man with a dark obsession with Congresswoman Giffords.

There have been other examples of the left and the media (BIRM) jumping the proverbial gun and deciding the perpetrator of whatever tragedy must be a Tea Party Constitutional Conservative; and as always, they never turn out to be correct.

It seems fairly obvious to state this…but the press is almost desperate for something…ANYTHING…to be linked to the Tea Party.  Rather than simply reporting the news, the lamestream media, living up to that moniker, continues to seek to incite rather than inform.

Well, for different reasons, actually.

First reason is the most obvious one.  They wish to discredit the Tea Party movement and smear all Tea Partiers as being complicit to violence.  They want proof of their deeply held belief that the Tea Party movement is a petri dish, fomenting hate and violence.

In doing so, they help take down the President’s opposition with what Professor Jacobson at LegalInsurrection has referred to as “Operation: Demoralize.”

The irony here, or rather blatant hypocrisy, is that they have absolutely no interest at all in discussing the actual criminal activity of the OWS protesters because that would run counter to their narrative.

Another reason?

Again, I’ll have to give another hat tip to LI for this…the Theater of Shiny Objects.

As my friend and fellow C4P editor Doug Brady pointed out earlier today to me in an email:

“Obama’s bone-headed, and revealing, contention that people who built businesses couldn’t have done so without the government has been dominating the news, and not to his benefit. So, predictably, the mainstream media does their best to change the subject. Today’s effort is by George Stephanopoulis and the gang at ABC who attempted to tie the Colorado shooting to, you guessed it, the Tea Party.”

Yes, the media will do what it can to help change the subject to something other than the President’s failed policies and fatally flawed ideology because they feel it’s their duty to protect him from himself rather than do what they’re called to do, which is report the truth with impartiality.

As for the facts of this case…we don’t know everything yet.  (And yes, Lamers, it’s okay to say that.)

But what we do know is that, predictably, the left and the media (BIRM) has once again taken a tragedy and morphed it into a political weapon to wield against the Tea Party and conservatives.  The media has once again tried to deflect attention from the President’s ridiculous and telling comments…this time, about business owners not being responsible for their own successes.

And further, that at the end of the day, the real perpetrator will for a time get a pass as not being the one responsible for his own actions.  The American Spectator’s Jeffrey Lord has this take

President Obama is caught in a political storm right this minute for trying to say of small business owners that “you didn’t build that, somebody else made that happen.” That is the anti-capitalist version of the argument the left has tried to make of tragic, murderous moments like the one today. The killer never bears 100% responsibility. Tim McVeigh didn’t blow up that federal building in Oklahoma, it was Rush Limbaugh. It was conservatives who shot Gabby Gifford, not the nut who pulled the trigger.

It is long past time for the lamestream press to stop their reckless, indefensible smearing of innocents in the name of protecting their preferred presidential candidate and forwarding their agenda.  The Great One, who stated today that Brian Ross and ABC have no decency, went on his show tonight and proclaimed that it’s time to call the media out for always blaming the right.

But since we cannot count on them to do so, we must continue to do as Governor Palin urged us during her speech at the RightOnline conference last month:  We must serve as citizen journalists who shine a bright light on the truth and keep holding the mainstream/lamestream media accountable for their actions.  “Every citizen can be a reporter,” she encouraged.

We can’t allow ourselves to give in to the frustration the left through their media emissaries seeks to engender within us; and we cannot abandon the field and allow their lies and misinformation stand unchallenged.

At the risk of riling up the lefties with a dangerous superscary Palin metaphor, never retreat…always reload.

Press onward and move forward, speaking the truth with boldness and confidence.

And always keep a sharp eye fixed on those who would use their media credentials or elected office…or any platform for that matter…to forward false narratives and destroy the lives of innocents because their ideology calls them to do so.

We’re watching them.

Are you?
