Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has selected Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan to be his running mate.
The candidate made his announcement to supporters via a phone app, saying — quote — “Mitt’s Choice for VP is Paul Ryan.” The GOP ticket was set to appear together at 9 A.M. Eastern in Norfolk, Va.
Romney and Ryan are kicking off a four-day bus tour that will take them to as many states.
At 42, Ryan is a generation younger than the 65-year-old Romney.
Some are suggesting this was a bold choice for Mitt. Perhaps. But I think, given the other names on his short list, it was his only choice. Team Mitt’s latest gaffe had the effect of rekindling conservative distrust of the Massachusetts moderate’s commitment to conservative principles and whether or not he’ll put forth the effort necessary to repeal Obamacare. In short, the Mittster had to do something to create some excitement among an understandably lethargic base ahead of the convention. Paul Ryan was the only one of the candidates Romney was vetting who could possibly accomplish this. We’ll see if it works.
Update: Via the Weekly Standard, here’s video of Ryan’s speech:
