Thank You For Your Patience as We Upgrade

Dear Loyal Readers:

Over the past few days, we have received numerous e-mails from readers informing us that they cannot enter the site and/or read its new content.  The date on the page they see is February 18th.

Further, we’ve been informed that they cannot log in or post comments.

We have upgraded the site due to some older plug-ins from the old format that began slowing the site down.  Our intention was to provide you with a more efficient website along with some exciting new features which have yet to be implemented.  However; we have experienced technical difficulties in the conversion.

We apologize for the inconvenience.

Please be assured that we are working on this and will get this ironed out just as soon as we can.  In the meantime, please let others know that the site has not shut down.

Thank you so much for your patience and loyalty.

Thank you for posting this update.

  • imo123

    yep, I’m having these problems

  • Mary Beth House

I truly apologize for these inconveniences. I think I’ve narrowed down the problem to both the core WordPress files as well as at least one plugin.

Thank you all for your patience and hopefully we’ll be able to get this figured out sooner rather than later. :)

Thank you for the information, Mary Beth. As you know, we have been grousing a bit. It has felt like we were out here flailing in the wind trying to converse with one another. I can’t speak for everyone else here, but I NEED my C4P fix. While there are other sites that support, Sarah that I have been visiting, there is something uniquely special about C4P. Now that we have heard directly from you, I for one am more than willing to wait patiently for however long it takes for you guys to iron out the kinks.
Have a great weekend, Mary Beth. Your diligence to your posters is much appreciated.

Thank you so much for keeping us informed.

Thank you for all your hard work to keep this place running, sorry that I was impatient, also just noticed that we now have a spell checker, that’s a good thing for folks like me. God bless you and all on this site today.

    • AmazedOne1

Thank you for all you’re doing, Mary Beth!

    • FrankinOhio

Thanks for all your work Steve and Mary Beth. We (C4P’ers) are all severely patient.

  • MarkRNY

My main complaint about the new format is the anonymous "Like" thing (and the childish "Dislike" thing (that trolls are already using). It also keeps making me log in and causes computer freezes, but that can be addressed and fixed I guess. That "Recommended for you" pop up can take a hike too!

Have to log in (and paragraph) again before I post this…there ya go!

    • blueniner

They are called "Down-Arrow Trolls"…they work in shifts……..LOL …..the like dislike thing should be removed, it is a needless distraction.

      • MarkRNY

I actually liked the "Likes" when they weren’t anonymous. Now we’re all just numbers…who else thinks of us that way btw??

  • Laddie_Blah_Blah

No problem, Steve, Mary Beth, et. al. We ain’t goin’ nowhere. Thanks for all you do.

  • virginiagentleman1

Good luck. It appears that you have your work cut out for you. I’m an affectionato of the old format, and likely won’t ever like this ‘new but not improved version’.
That being said, even with the glitches, this is still C4P and the ‘net home for many of us, me included.
A small favor if you will, how about ditching the anonymous like and dislike stuff and reinstall the former like system where we are able to ‘see’ who responds to us. This new format is rather informal compared to what we are used to, Mary Beth. Thanks milady. VG

Thanks! You’re a wise man and are very much appreciated around here along with everyone else. Thanks again for your patience and kindness.

I seem to get stuck at a certain post. I can close out, come back in to a new homepage, go to the open thread comments and boom! no new comments even when I’ve seen mine or another posted previously. It’s very strange.

Like right now: my page is stuck at Dan C.’s comment from 2 hours ago. Fixed that. Somehow my discussion selection had reset itself at Best. That is the problem then.

One more question: I downloaded the Ghostery add-on. What do I have to leave "on" in order to see the comments here at C4P? I initially tried to stop all 3PES and Cookies — and that was not a good idea.

      It’s like the film memento.

    Thanks for the update, Steve/MB.
I right-clicked under ‘latest’ for this thread and then clicked under open in a new tab. It took a while, but it worked. It takes longer to load, but I am finally here.
I was able to post a couple of nights ago only by chance. lol
I agree with all of the issues that have been addressed, especially anything ‘anonymous.’
As I stated the other night (OT), I am only an occasional poster, but I do enjoy coming to C4P, whether it’s just to read the comments or post.
I appreciate this site and those who own/manage it.
    Thank you so much!

For the future: Please inform us before making a major change. This will save a lot of angst both for us who feel like we were blind-sided and for you C4P webmasters who now are worrying about the site suffering for others not being able to login and who remain in the dark as to what may be going on.

I agree with VG and MarkRNY below, the anonymous arrow will encourage sadistic trolls (sorry for the redundancy). However, when you get settled in, you may want to use it as a honey trap to indentify malefactors who are abusing the down arrow, and block them. It might be worth it then, but still, it was nice to use the Like to communicate our appreciation of other commenters and was a way for us to say Thank You to those who appreciated ours.

    • Steve_Flesher

Thanks, sir. Wise words which are appreciated and you’re correct, lessons have been learned.

There was a time, and not that long ago, the term upgrade had a simple and usually positive meaning.

Not so today. Today it’s a word that as often as not means chaos, inefficiency and loss. Our ‘upgraded’ medical system is a perfect case in point, as is our ‘upgraded’ airport security screening process.

Thanks for the input and prognosis MB and Steve.

They say the road to hell is paved with good intentions. LOL I think y’all must feel a bit like you’re in computer hell at times like this.
    Thanks for hanging in there!

  • ZH100

Thanks for the update and thank you C4P for all the hard work you do.

  • daisy_mae

In the words of Tina Turner, you C4P mods are simply the best! XXXOOO

  • MaMcGriz

It’s getting better! I can now come on and be in exactly the right place.

I can now answer a post in my dashboard and get to the actual place in the thread where the discussion is taking place. This is a feature I welcome back.

I’m still not a fan of the pagination. I like pages much better than ‘open more comments’ but I don’t have to like. I just need to know how to make it go. :)

  • RedDaveR

Thanks for the update. As happens often in my work, change does not come easily and bugs often appear. I liked the pages in the old system, but I’m learning how to make it work.
One thing I hope can be fixed soon: When logging-on it still brings up yesterday’s old threads. This could cost C4P some new viewers who may not be aware of the situation. This site needs to be easy to access for any first-timers.

  • 01_Explorer_01

I think there are two issues here. First one, is things need to work correctly and accurately. Secondly is change in format. We can get use to the change in format but loading the correct pages and logging in for some is a must fix. Especially for newcomers.

    Bug report:

MB click on your avatar, then "My Disqus". Try to clear all of your notifications. It cannot be done. Once you get through them they present themselves again. If you clear them again the number of notifications goes negative. One can get a reading of, for instance, a negative seven (-7) notifications. This is not your fault but a fauliure of Disqus quality control. No way should you have to deal with such detail.

    • AmazedOne1

That seems to be working better now for me. Does it work properly for you?

I feel much better now after hearing from you guys! I know you’ll get it fixed, and we’ll muddle through in the meantime. Thanks for the work you do on this site!

  • JP_AZ

Occasional poster, frequent visitor and reader. Love C4P!!
How about putting a disclaimer telling all to refresh page on home page until the "technical difficulties" are resolved? That was what I did a few days ago when I saw that the content on the home page was dated several days earlier…I figured it was a glitch, as I know y’all ain’t going anywhere!! :-)
